Can you get an film quote engraved on your engagement ring?
Valentine’s Day is almost here again. But we’re skipping over the usual V-Day interest piece this year. Instead, we’re digging into the essence of what makes this holiday iconic: hopeless, hapless, sentimental romance.
On Valentine’s Day love feels extra sweet (thanks much in part to the actual sweets) and this is what drives so many of us to revisit our favourite romantic comedies all throughout February.
Like most people, we’re obsessed with the sappy soundtracks and maudlin meet-cutes of rom-coms and in rewatching our favourites we’ve been thinking about all the couples who get quotes engraved into the inside of their wedding and engagement rings. It’s a perfect way to make your ring feel truly personal, a secret ode to all the tears and laughter you’ve shared over the years.
We’ve all got that one romantic film that reminds us of what it felt like to fall in love, so why not get a line from your favourite rom-com engraved in your engagement ring?
Below is a list of our top five most beloved lines from films that make our heart swoon to help you get inspired!
‘If you’re a bird, I’m a bird.’ — The Notebook (2004)
If the 2000s were defined through a single romantic film, there’s no doubt it would be The Notebook. This passionate story of devotion and loss changed the game when it came to kissing in the rain and lying down in the middle of the road (if you know, you know).
Our favourite romantic line comes when Noah (Ryan Gosling) tells Allie (Rachael McAdams) that they’re both birds, both eternally free, and that he’d be whatever she wanted him to be because that’s how strong their love is.
‘As you wish.’ — The Princess Bride (1987)
The whimsy of this fairytale story-within-a-story makes The Princess Bride one of our all-time favourite rom-coms. Who could forget lovelorn Wesley’s repeated promise to Princess Buttercup: ‘As you wish’.
To quote the film, ‘She was amazed to discover that when he was saying “as you wish”, what he meant was “I love you.”’ Because real love puts your partner’s needs before your own and real love is selfless. Someone pass the tissues!
‘You want the moon? I’ll give you the moon, Mary.’ — It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)
Although it’s often classified as a Christmas film, there’s no denying It’s a Wonderful Life tells a story of enduring love and youthful romance that can still make us tear up over 75 years after the film’s release.
Filled with idealism and hope, a young George (James Stewart) and Mary (Donna Hatch) think of their wishes for the future. When you love someone, it feels like you’d stop at nothing to make them happy. You’d lasso the moon if you could just to see them smile.
‘I like you very much. Just as you are.’ —Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001)
Another unbeatable rom-com of the 2000s, but this time based on the work of one of the greatest romance writers in history. Bridget Jones Diary is a modern take on Jane Austen’s 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice, so there’s no wonder it’s so universally adored.
This line, said by love interest Mark (Colin Firth) to Bridget (Renée Zellweger) gets to the heart of what makes love so remarkable: that you’ve someone who sees you for exactly who you are and they adore you for it, flaws and all.
‘You had me at hello.’ — Jerry Maguire (1996)
Rom-com meets sports drama film Jerry Maguire may not hinge upon a romantic relationship, but that doesn’t stop this movie from delivering some pretty unforgettable lines about love and life.
As Jerry (Tom Cruise) confesses how much he needs Dorothy (Renée Zellweger) in his life, she cuts him off to explain: ‘You had me at hello’. It’s such a simple phrase yet perfectly encapsulates the way real love can appear out of the blue but the moment it arrives, you just know.
The best part of designing your engagement and wedding ring is that nothing is off limits.
What makes a relationship strong is its depth: the small adventures, the in-jokes you share, the stolen glances across crowded rooms. Any one of these memories can be incorporated into your design—including the line from your favourite film that echoes in your mind each time your partner walks into a room.
